Machine learning scientist weather satellite data - De Bilt - ref. t72411415
Do you want to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to enhance realtime weather forecasting and warning systems? At the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), you will develop an AI/ML framework to transform satellite data from the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG-1) into accurate predictions of extreme weather events.
Using deep learning and big data, you will improve the precision of warnings for heavy rainfall, lightning, hail, strong wind gusts, and tornadoes. Integrating your work into the KNMI Early Warning Center (EWC), you will contribute to the safety of people and infrastructure.Interesting? Please apply!
What will you be doing?
You will develop an AI/ML framework that processes realtime satellite data from MTG’s Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) and Lightning Imager (LI) to enhance the detection and forecasting of extreme weather. These state-of-the-art instruments provide a unique opportunity to improve the accuracy and timeliness of severe weather alerts.
To generate reliable nowcasts, you will train ML algorithms using historical storm data from the European Severe Storms Lab (ESSL). You will build upon established methodologies, such as the U.S. ProbSevere nowcasting model, and tailor these techniques for European weather systems.
With your expertise in data science and AI, you will:
- develop advanced ML models and experiment with deep learning, data engineering, and real-time analytics
- work closely with meteorologists in the KNMI weather room and the Early Warning Center to ensure AI-driven insights seamlessly integrate into operational decision-making
- actively contribute to the KNMI AI/ML research community, sharing knowledge and driving innovation
Your work will contribute to a versatile AI framework, applicable to future research challenges and foundation models in meteorology and climate science.
This gives you energy
You are passionate about applying state-of-the-art AI techniques to solve real world challenges. You thrive in an environment where scientific research meets practical application, and your work directly contributes to public safety.
By collaborating with meteorologists, AI/ML experts, and operational teams, you will be part of an innovative research environment where your models and algorithms will be actively used in weather forecasting operations.
Are you ready to make a meaningful impact and advance AI in meteorology? Apply now and help shape the future of AI-driven weather forecasting!
