Expert Process Technology
We are looking for a motivated and capable Chemical Engineer who wants to become part of our Chemistry and Technology team. The job is based on the Chemelot Campus in Geleen.
The Team
The ENVALIOR Chemistry and Technology team consists of around 22 people, including (sr.) Experts in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, lab and pilot-plant technicians. Joining this group, you will have some projects of your own, while relying on and contributing to the expertise and projects of others.Hence, together we make projects successful. Expertise is freely shared and ranges from SHE and Quality, Thermodynamics, Reactor Engineering, Unit Operations, Reaction Mechanisms and Analytics to (pant data) modeling with various tools (Aspen PE, Excel, Python, CFD, gProms, DEM and others).
Lab and pilot-scale facilities are available that enable characterization and scale-up as well as production of test batches for product and market development.
The team works closely with the plant engineers in manufacturing, lab technicians and principal scientist and other R&D groups like the Analytics, Digitization and Product development teams. Projects are discussed and reviewed regularly with stakeholders from R&D, business, manufacturing and product development as needed.
Due to the broadness of the expertise, the details of the manufacturing processes, a close connection to the business and the open atmosphere, this is a great learning environment.
The projects
Projects come in different flavors:
- Plant support projects assist plant staff with solutions for more complicated or persistent problems that need R&D involvement. They aim at improved productivity and efficiency and may involve deeper analysis, modeling, sampling, sample analysis, advise on plant settings and procedures. Maintaining regular, good contact with plant staff is essential for plant support.
- Plant improvement projects run alongside plant support and may be triggered by good, profitable technical ideas with improved sustainability, business opportunities and by external demands on emissions and License to Operate. They can involve (tests at) external partners.
- Debottlenecking projects are triggered by increased demand and can be quite large. Here, the R&D engineer delivers (part of) the technical scope and sometimes joins in the execution phase with external parties.
- Product development projects evolve from (changing) market demands and involve lab and pilot-scale production, quality assurance and scale-up and implementation in full-size manufacturing equipment.
- Know-how projects aim to maintain and expand knowledge and tools in specific areas to enable better and profitable solutions for both short and long term projects. They often involve modeling and experimentation and may involve external parties/universities.
The Task
Find your place in the team and get to know your stakeholders and their technologies. Steadily expand your contribution:
- To one or more of the ENVALIOR polycondensation based processes/product lines by being active in plant support, plant improvement, product developments, and maintaining the competence.
- To define and lead projects within your own or adjacent fields of expertise.
- To actively contribute to Safety, Health and Environment within the team and field of expertise.
Depending on their level of expertise, they should grow to lead complex projects that may involve multiple stakeholders, both within ENVALIOR (R&D, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, etc.) and externally (tolling partners, equipment suppliers, pilot plant facilities, etc.).
Key areas of accountability/responsibility- Serve as the primary liaison between plant personnel and R&D for the designated product line(s) and plant(s).
- Offer assistance to the engineers at the (pilot) plant.
- Play a role in projects by establishing the integrated project plan for the process technology discipline, gathering necessary inputs, supervising and overseeing the experimental activities at lab and/or pilot scale, conducting R&D tasks as outlined in the project plan, and identifying any current or potential bottlenecks.
- Ensure the efficient and effective implementation of assigned R&D tasks, engage project members, report on the progress of R&D activities, and ensure that results are recorded and/or acted upon.
- Foster strong connections with the Polymerization Technology team, relevant plant engineers, product development specialists, and other ENVALIOR stakeholders, including coordinating with external parties in conjunction with the Principal Scientist.
- Maintain and enhance the required level of expertise by collaborating with (Sr.) experts from Envalior and/or external resources alongside the Principal Scientist.
- Stay vigilant and proactive regarding opportunities or risks related to intellectual property (IP).
- Adhere to SHEQ requirements and guidelines and actively contribute to a safe working environment.
In summary
A solid background in Chemical Engineering is required, while knowledge and experience in one or more of the following fields is an advantage: polymer processing, polymer properties, polymerization/polycondensation chemistry, process modeling, project management and manufacturing.
The responsibilities of this role will include a combination of leading and participating in projects, offering plant support, maintaining technical knowledge, and assisting various other functions (such as IP, Quality, Supply Chain, etc.).
This role requires effective collaboration with individuals across multiple internal departments.
Requirements
The Ideal Candidate:
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in process technology within a manufacturing environment.
- Strong analytical skills and a data-driven mindset.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a knack for fostering collaboration.
- Innovative thinker with a passion for continuously improving processes.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in manufacturing processes.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
